DEEPER THAN COFFEE

Breaker’s came to us to help design their logo, branding and packaging for their upcoming coffee brand. After discussing the values and goals of the brand, we decided on focusing on the origin of each coffee the stories that follow them. From the farmers that pick the beans, the collectives that harvest and prepare them, and the benefits that these groups present to struggling communities.

BRAND IDENTITY

ORGANIC & ABSTRACT

After a few rounds and concepts, we decided that the logo should be representative of the brand names partial reference to the ocean and also their collaboration with the farming communities they partner with and contribute to. We composed the icon to resemble swells in the ocean and rolling farmlands.

For the wordmark, we wanted to maintain some organic cohesiveness while sticking with something that could last with trends. Therefore, we stuck with a sans serif font with a mild bézier curve on the corners to make it less harsh.

PACKAGING

ILLUSTRATED NARRATIVES

We wanted to stand out from other items on the shelf, so we began developing stories to go along with each coffee and tell it’s story through detailed illustrations.

After extensive research on each location, we began illustrating focusing on specific elements that were specific to the regions they were grown and the communities that harvested them.

CARDIFF CAMPFIRE

The brand began and has their flagship store in Cardiff, California, so we decided to showcase some of what Cardiff is best known for. We implemented the local beach & campgrounds, the Cardiff Kook Statue, cliffs, the Cardiff hillside, and all sorts of fun easter eggs set within a classic sunset backdrop.

LLAMA BEANS

To showcase the Peruvian blend, we showcased the mountainous landscape where the beans were harvested. We decided to introduce some characters into this variation with some eccentric llama’s in front of the city of Cusco, farm fields & Machu Picchu. Finally, we added in a portion of the Peruvian logo which is also a symbol for pachamama, the Incan version of Mother Nature.

DESERT BLOOM

For the Desert Bloom, we wanted to focus on the CoOp in the Guji Kercha Guracho area that this blend was harvested from. Set within an Ethiopian high desert landscape, we wanted to showcase the actual life and process of the farm, from the fields, to the drying stations, to the workers sorting the beans. We finalized the illustration with a traditional Ethiopian coffee pouring & roasting ceremony.

CYRUS THE GREAT

Cyrus the great is the brands signature series blend and a homage to the owners father. We referenced Renaissance statues to display Cyrus the Great and replaced it with Cyrus the great father in his flannel & golf shoes. We then set in a backdrop of local sites including the companies local farm, Cardiff lagoon & train tracks, flower fields & Swami’s beach.

MUUNGANO

Muungano looks to blend the style of Llama Beans & Desert Bloom with showcasing the farmlands while also being playful and reinstalling Cyrus on a stand up paddle drifting down the Congo River. We set it in the mountainous region where the coffee is harvested on Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
